The Artist Behind the Creatures
Corbin J. Schmidt is a self-taught artist whose work explores the intersection of nature, wildlife, mythology, and imagination through ceramic sculpture and illustration.
Inspired by the creatures, stories, and patterns found in the natural world, Corbin creates original works that blend the familiar with the fantastical. Drawing influence from wildlife, folklore, and Indigenous and Mesoamerican artistic traditions, his sculptures often reimagine animals through a lens of wonder, curiosity, and storytelling.
Working from his home studio in Northern California, Corbin hand-sculpts each piece individually, bringing imagined creatures and characters to life through texture, form, and color. His goal is to create work that sparks curiosity, encourages a deeper connection with nature, and reminds viewers of the sense of wonder often found in childhood.
His recent exhibitions include the California State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition 2026 and Companions in Clay: A Benefit for the Front Street Animal Shelter.
